There are two names for the Northern Lights depending on the aurora on the northern or southern hemispheres.
On the northern hemispheres it's Aurora Borealis while the southern
lights is Aurora Australis - both are caused by the same
phenomena.
The aurora is caused by particles from the sun striking atoms in earth’s atmosphere. These solar particles called “solar wind” are expelled by the sun all the time, and the atmosphere protects us from the particles. When the solar particles hits the atmosphere, oxygen and hydrogen atoms light up, emitting colours like green, red, purple, and white.
